Stockroom in the Running for Building of the Year

Stockroom, Stockport has been shortlisted for the prestigious Greater Manchester Chamber of Commerce’s Building of the Year award, which celebrates landmark projects delivered across the region over the past 12 months.

The award recognises buildings that make an outstanding contribution to Greater Manchester, considering factors such as economic and community impact, urban regeneration, environmental enhancement and design quality. Last year’s winner was Co-op Live.

Delivered for Stockport Council and located at the heart of Stockport town centre, Stockroom is an innovative cultural and creative hub created within repurposed retail units in the Merseyway Shopping Centre. The scheme brings together a library, children’s learning space, café bar, Stockport’s historic archives and a flexible events venue – Stockroom Studios – forming a welcoming civic destination that supports creativity, culture and learning.

Project Director Phil Hepworth said: “Stockroom has redefined the civic offer within Stockport town centre. Once-vacant retail units have been transformed into a vibrant, multi-use community hub with creativity, culture and learning at its heart.

“It’s incredibly exciting to see the project recognised as one of Greater Manchester’s best new buildings. Stockroom sets a strong precedent for the creative reuse of existing assets, showing how thoughtful design can reshape town centres and strengthen local identity.”

The team will join fellow finalists at the Building of the Year Awards on 5th March.

This latest recognition follows Stockroom’s recent shortlisting at The Revo Awards 2025, in the Best Repurposing and Placemaking category.
