Stockroom, Stockport has been shortlisted for a prestigious Pineapple Award in the Community Space category – celebrating significant projects that make an outstanding contribution to place.
The nomination celebrates Stockroom’s impact as a civic and cultural hub, designed to bring people together and enhance everyday life in the town centre. Judges from across the industry will visit the scheme as part of the awards process.
Stockroom is an innovative cultural and community focused hub which has seen us repurpose vacant retail units in the Merseyway Shopping Centre. The hub provides vital public services, including birth registration, alongside library space, quiet study areas, creative rooms, heritage displays, family-friendly spaces, a Changing Places facility, and flexible studios for performances, workshops and community events. The result is a vibrant, intergenerational space for learning, creativity and social connection.
The impact of Stockroom on Stockport is clear, playing a key role in the wider regeneration of the Merseyway Shopping Centre and Stockport Town Centre. Within three months of opening, the building welcomed more than 250,000 visitors who borrowed 20,000 books from the library, enjoyed 15,000 coffees and took part in a vibrant programme of activities with 190 events and nearly 4,000 participants. The project also supported the shopping centre to achieve a record footfall of over 10 million people in 2025 – a 40% increase year on year.
Project Director Phil Hepworth said: “Stockroom has played a key part in the regeneration of the Merseyway and Stockport Town Centre. The response from the local community has been incredible. It’s exciting to now see the scheme recognised through this Pineapple Awards shortlisting.”
The recognition adds to a growing list of accolades for the project which recently achieved a triple win at the Loo of the Year Awards – Best Baby Changing Facilities in England, the Best Baby Changing Facilities in the UK and Best Toilet Facilities in a Shopping Centre in England. The awards celebrate the very best washrooms throughout the UK and Ireland.
