Radius, Arden Square, Crewe

Architecture

Our second commission for Radius Payment Solutions has seen us design a new 44,300 sqft office on the last remaining plot in Crewe Business Park at Arden Square.

As part of their continued growth, Radius approached Aew to design and deliver a new workplace to house their telemetrics division. The new building aims to build on the success and lessons learned from their Aew designed 66,000 sqft global HQ, also within the business park, and the recently refurbished Eurocard and Eurosales offices.

Our initial brief was that the new workspace was to feel part of the Radius Campus but, as it housed a different business, could vary in its appearance from the HQ. The building would not only provide workspace but also provide a warehouse component where items are delivered, packed and shipped – a new concept for the group. The internal spaces could also be slightly different allowing users from both buildings to share facilities.

Working closely with the end user, we led engagement workshops with senior management and department leads to help shape and develop the brief. These resulted in a bespoke solution which provided flexible modern working environments, responded to operational efficiency of the warehouse, provides spaces which inspire, engage and maximise the user and visitor experience and maintain institutional standards.

The building is four storeys high and comprises two wings of workspace which flank a central space. This area provides amenity (such as a barista coffee station and pizza bar), vertical circulation, breakout spaces, meeting rooms and a roof top ‘sky bar’ all arranged around a conical 4 storey atrium which terminates with a roof light. The sky bar provides event space for staff and customers which spills out onto a roof top terrace.

We worked closely with the interior designers (space invader design) to ensure the internal layout of the building was designed to maximise flexibility to allow for modern working trends as they change and develop.

Externally the site accommodates ample south facing amenity for staff, accessed from the atrium area. The landscaped car park provides a large number of EV charging points and is designed with pedestrian movement across the site to the HQ in mind.

The building is clad in a fibre cement board in contrasting tones to provide a visually interesting and striking appearance with feature anodised cladding to pick up key features of the building such as the roof top terrace.

We originally achieved planning approval for an office scheme on the site in 2018, before revising our proposals to meet the clients updated requirements and achieved approval for a variation in December 2021. Work started on site in May 2022 with construction by Caddick.
